INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Former Indiana Chief Justice Randall Shepard has received recognition for encouraging citizen participation in government.

The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site in Indianapolis has honored Shepard with its 2014 Advancing American Democracy Award. Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge John Tinder will present the award to Shepard on Sept. 11 at the Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis.

The award recognizes an individual who advances the values of American democracy by encouraging and enabling ethical citizen participation in government. Past recipients have included former U.S. Sen. Richard G. Lugar, former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton and U.S. District Judge Sarah Evans Barker.

Shepard was appointed Indiana chief justice in March 1987 and retired from the court in March 2012. He was the longest-serving chief justice in Indiana history.
