Speed, Alcohol Suspected in Two-Vehicle Crash on Airport Expressway

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Fort Wayne police are investigating a serious overnight crash that left one driver with life-threatening injuries on Airport Expressway near Lower Huntington Road.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, officers were called to the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of a two-vehicle collision on Airport Expressway just south of the Lower Huntington Road intersection.

TWO DRIVERS HOSPITALIZED

When officers arrived, they found an SUV that had left the roadway following the crash. Police say the female driver of the SUV was conscious and listed in stable condition.

Investigators say the second vehicle, an Audi coupe, came to rest against a guardrail.

The male driver of the Audi was found unconscious and suffering from life-threatening injuries before being transported by medics to a local hospital.

POLICE: SPEED AND ALCOHOL POSSIBLE FACTORS

Preliminary findings indicate the SUV was traveling southbound or westbound on Airport Expressway when it was struck from behind by the Audi, which investigators say appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed.

Fort Wayne police say both speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in the crash, though the investigation remains ongoing.

FACT TEAM TAKES OVER INVESTIGATION

Due to the seriousness of the injuries, the department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) was called to the scene and has assumed control of the investigation.

The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Air Support Unit (ASU) also responded to assist with aerial documentation and scene reconstruction.

BOTTOM LINE

A late-night crash on Airport Expressway has left one Fort Wayne driver critically injured, with investigators now focusing on whether excessive speed and alcohol played a role in the violent collision.
