INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – One of the most famous intersections in Indianapolis is on its way to getting a new look.
Officials from the town of Speedway turned shovels full of dirt Monday during a ceremonial groundbreaking on a two-lane roundabout outside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The project will replace the current stoplight-controlled intersection at West 16th and Main Streets and Crawfordsville Road. When construction is complete, Georgetown Road no longer will intersect with 16th Street outside the track.
Town officials say the new roundabout will result in fewer vehicle stops and accidents, fewer delays during peak travel times, and reduced air and noise pollution.
The project is due to be completed by November. The estimated $15 million cost is 80 percent federally funded.
