State Police and BBB Warn About IRS Scam

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Officers with the Indiana State Police in Fort Wayne and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Northern Indiana are teaming up to remind Hoosiers about a recent IRS scam that is circulating the area.

According to officials with the BBB consumers are receiving menacing calls from individuals, who state that they are with the IRS. The reason stated for their call is that they’re collecting on taxes owed since 2002. Threats of arrest and jail time are made, if an immediate payment isn’t given.

Police say these calls are not legitimate and there are laws in place that prohibit these kinds of threats. If you truly owed money in back taxes, the IRS would send out notifications via mail.

For concerns regarding these calls, the IRS can be reached at 800-829-1049.
