State police warn Hoosiers not to fall for scam

Indiana State Police say an old magazine prize scam has resurfaced in southeastern Indiana and could sweep statewide.

In the scam, people receive telephone calls advising them they have won hundreds of thousands of dollars in a magazine promotion contest and they should wire money via Western Union to cover taxes and processing fees.

Anyone receiving such a call should first ask themselves, “Did I enter the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes?''

They then should check the area code of the originating call. The most recent calls in southeastern Indiana originated from area code 876 in Jamaica.

Actual Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes winners are never contacted by phone and do not have to pay any money up front to receive their cash prizes.
