Study Shows Aquaculture Sales Rising in Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Sales from Indiana aquaculture farms have more than quadrupled since 2006 as the industry increases its foothold in the state's agriculture industry.

A Purdue Extension report found sales jumped from $3.5 million in 2006 to more than $15 million in 2012.

The Journal & Courier reports Indiana's aquaculture industry includes operations that produce fish to stock ponds and lakes, those for human consumption and ornamental fish for aquariums and residential ponds.

The Purdue Extension study says the small but growing industry has potential to benefit all Indiana farmers because soybeans are a staple of fish foods worldwide.

Only 1 percent of the U.S. soybean crop is used in aquaculture, but the Indiana Soybean Alliance says it considers aquaculture its next new market.
