Suspicious Fire at South Bend Property Kills One

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ A suspicious fire has left one person dead near South Bend and a house and pole barn heavily damaged.

Firefighters were called to the property just south of the city about 2 a.m. Monday and soon found the remains of a body in the barn. WNDU-TV and WSBT-TV report police were called in a couple hours later due to concerns that the blazes were the result of arson.

St. Joseph County assistant police chief Bill Thompson tells the South Bend Tribune that the fires are considered suspicious because two separate structures were involved and based on what firefighters saw.

Investigators didn't immediately what caused the fires.

Firefighters, the state fire marshal's office, county police and the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit are all investigating.
