EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — The University of Southern Indiana's Faculty Senate has voted to oppose Indiana's proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

Eight senators voted in favor of a motion that opposes the ban, three voted against it and two abstained during Friday's Faculty Senate meeting at a packed hall on the Evansville campus.

The Evansville Courier and Press reports the motion states that proposed gay marriage ban “is not consistent with the best interests of the faculty, staff and students of USI.” It also encourages the school's administration and the Indiana General Assembly to oppose the ban.

Faculty at the University of Evansville, Indiana University, Purdue, Ball State, Butler and other Indiana schools have all gone on record opposing the proposed constitutional amendment.
