DAYTON, OH (WOWO) The Better Business Bureau is warning residents to be cautious of potential snow removal scams following a historic winter storm that dropped as much as 14 inches of snow across the region.
Xavier Hershovitz, a consumer investigator with WHIO News Center 7, reported that many residents are facing snowed-in cars, blocked driveways, and sidewalks. Tammy Tillman, a local resident, said she was busy shoveling her driveway and brushing snow off her car. “We usually do it ourselves, because we just don’t think ahead,” she said.
Sherr Sword, vice president of communications for the Miami Valley BBB, said scammers often take advantage of major weather events. She cautioned that residents should carefully vet anyone offering snow removal services, whether through social media, door-to-door solicitation, or other channels.
“Take your time and hire the right contractor,” Sword said. “Research them. Get references. Talk to people who have used their services to see what their experience has been.” She also recommended never paying the full amount upfront, as some operators may take money and fail to complete the job.
Sword added that planning ahead is key. Keeping a list of trusted snow removal contractors before a storm can help residents avoid scams and ensure their property is safely cleared. The same precautions apply for any home repair or emergency service that might be needed during extreme cold.
