BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) _ Indiana University is investigating two confirmed cases of mumps on the Bloomington campus that so far appear unconnected.

The university said Wednesday the cases were identified two weeks apart.

It says it’s working with the Monroe County Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health on identifying and notifying anyone who may have been in close contact with the two patients.

IU Health Center Medical Director Diana Ebling says even if people have been vaccinated against the disease, most vaccines aren’t 100 percent effective.

She says mumps is generally a mild illness and usually lasts about five days. It typically starts with a low-grade fever. Other symptoms include headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite, and swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears on one or both sides.
