60-year Sentence Ordered for Western Indiana Death

ROCKVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ A western Indiana man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the beating death of a woman he lived with.

A Parke County judge ordered the sentence Wednesday for 53-year-old Earl Edwards for the June 2013 fatal attack on 55-year-old Kathryn Bays at their home near the rural town of Rosedale. Edwards pleaded guilty in July to murder and other charges.

The Tribune-Star reports Judge Sam Swaim called the attack torture as an autopsy found Bays suffered dozens of wounds before she died.

Police said Edwards told investigators that Bays stabbed him before he attacked her and that he knew she was dead before traveling to Georgia, where he surrendered for arrest the next day.

Edwards' attorney said she didn't know whether he would appeal the sentence.
