FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Historic Franklin School in Fort Wayne could soon be a memory.

City Leaders presented a $331 thousand dollar bid to demolish the building and make way for a new city park. The park would include a splash pad.

Greg Leatherman with Community Development told city council last night renovating the building isn't realistic.

He says the structural and environmental work could total more than $11 to $13 million.

The school, on St. Mary's Avenue, was built in 1921 and remained in service through 1981. Later it housed the Marine Reserve and Fort Wayne Police Department.

A final vote to approve demolishing is expected next week. Once approved, interior prep work at school could begin immediately.
