PERU, Ind. (AP) – An Indiana conservation officer says a bald eagle has been electrocuted in northern Indiana after likely swooping down to feed on an animal carcass and slamming into high-tension wires.

Officer Jonathon Boyd tells the Kokomo Tribune (http://bit.ly/1tK54UE ) the eagle found last week near Peru wasn't fully developed. It had a wingspan of 7 feet, 6 inches and had grown 3-inch talons.

Boyd says it's unusual for any bird to be electrocuted in power lines, but especially rare for bald eagles. He says eagles have excellent eyesight, but don't have good peripheral vision when honed in on a target.

Eagles no longer are listed among endangered or threatened species after conservation efforts allowed the population to rebound and flourish in Indiana.
