CINCINNATI (AP) _ An attorney challenging Ohio's ban on same-sex marriage says he's “thrilled'' that the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to decide the issue.
Cincinnati attorney Al Gerhardstein says the announcement Friday means there will soon be a national answer to the divisive question of whether same-sex people have a constitutional right to marry.
He also notes that besides state bans, the court will consider whether states must recognize marriages licensed in other states. That was the contention of his lawsuit filed in 2013 for a gay couple in Ohio married in Maryland.
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine's office says he has long expected that the Supreme Court would ultimately decide the issue.
The court agreed to review a Nov. 6 ruling by a divided federal appeals panel in Cincinnati.
