Three Year Anniversary of Derecho in NE Indiana

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Three years ago, a perfect storm formed over northern Indiana.

That's because a derecho hit the listening area on June 29th, 2012, bringing with it not a lot of rain, but a whole lot of wind.

In fact, meteorologist Evan Bentley with the National Weather Service says it was hot and humid that day. “And that provided the energy necessary for the big wind storm to form and move across the area,” Bentley told WOWO news. “Including a 91 mile per hour wind gust in Fort Wayne, which was the highest wind gust in ever recorded at the airport.”

Power was knocked out for a week for some people in Fort Wayne after the storm hit. That same storm toppled trees in Washington D.C. later that night.

The National Weather Service posted some highlights of the June 29th, 2012 storm here.
