Pence Backs Alternative Business Tax Cut

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Gov. Mike Pence is backing a House alternative to his call for the elimination of a local tax on business equipment.

Pence said last month he would like to see the state's business property tax phased out. After an outcry from local leaders, House Republican leaders proposed giving counties the choice of whether to eliminate the tax.

Pence Budget Chief Chris Atkins told members of the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday the governor is supporting the House plan.

Senate Republicans have crafted a different measure that would eliminate the tax for most small businesses and cut the state's corporate income tax instead.
