TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP): A new hiking trail planned along the Wabash River in western Indiana is on hold while officials conduct tests to determine if parts of the pathway might be tainted with contaminants.
 
The pathway will sit atop a long-defunct road paved with cinders that are now regarded as an environmental contaminant. Testing along the path must be done before construction can begin.
 
Terre Haute city planner Pat Martin says if no environmental problems are revealed the city plans to cap the cinders with soil and pave them with crushed stone.
 
Part of the trail will run through city-owned land found last year to be tainted with lead.
 
Martin says that section must be cleaned up before the trail can extend its full 1.5 miles.
