INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Gov. Mike Pence is urging Indiana's often-divided education leaders to work together to prevent the state from losing its waiver from the national No Child Left Behind law.
Pence said Friday that he was “disappointed and concerned'' by findings in a U.S. Department of Education report that found Indiana had failed to meet the conditions of its waiver. </div>
A letter sent to schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz says the waiver is on conditional status and warns that a failure to resolve the issues could cost the state its exemption.
Pence says the State Board of Education and the Indiana Department of Education must make preserving the waiver the “highest priority.'' The state has 60 days to present the federal department with its plans to address the deficiencies.
