NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ A judge has sentenced a man to 16 years for the accidental shooting death of a central Indiana teenager who was hailed as a hero for helping save two girls who fell into an icy lake.
Twenty-year-old Jacob Travis McDaniel of Noblesville was sentenced to 13 years on a charge of reckless homicide and three years, with one year suspended, for pointing a firearm.
The charges stemmed from the Dec. 9, 2013, shooting of 16-year-old Aubrey Peters. Prosecutors said McDaniel was showing a gun to Peters and two others and after Peters refused to hold the weapon, McDaniel, thinking it was unloaded, pointed it at her and pulled the trigger.
Peters, then 13, helped save two young girls who fell through ice on Morse Reservoir near Noblesville in March 2010.
