Jury Selection set to Begin in Woman’s Trial in Baby’s Death

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Jury selection is set to begin in the trial of a northern Indiana woman charged in the death of her baby whose body was found in a restaurant trash bin.

WNDU-TV reports (http://bit.ly/15eo6NW ) that jury selection was scheduled to begin Thursday in Purvi Patel's trial on charges of feticide and neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Patel was seven months pregnant when authorities allege that she took drugs to end her pregnancy, but the baby was born alive.

The infant's body was found outside a Mishawaka restaurant in July 2013.

Court documents say Patel told doctors the baby was stillborn, but a pathologist ruled the infant was born alive.
