NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) – A jury has convicted a southern Indiana man of being a habitual offender after also finding him guilty of murder in the slaying of his late mother's best friend.
 
The Courier Journal reports the conviction Wednesday could mean an additional 30-year sentence for William Clyde Gibson. Prosecutors say it was needed to ensure Gibson never leaves prison.
 
The same jury recommended Tuesday that Gibson be executed for the April 2012 slaying of 75-year-old Christine Whitis of Clarksville. The judge is bound by law to follow the recommendation. Gibson faces sentencing Nov. 26.
 
The 55-year-old New Albany man still faces two murder trials in connection with the slayings of women from nearby Charlestown and from Florida. He also could receive the death penalty if convicted in the Charlestown woman's case.
