Copper Thefts Put Public Safety in Indianapolis At Risk

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): A series of copper cable thefts recently put public safety at risk.

Thieves stole aerial copper telephone cables from a number of south-side and southwest-side locations in Marion County and in Hendricks County. Investigators said some of the thefts had no major implications, but one wire theft disrupted radar at the Indianapolis airport and the local National Weather Service office.

Investigators said the thieves taking the wire are knowledgeable about the poles and wires, and they might be using a bucket truck to access the lines. Investigators said the stolen wire is possibly being taken to a scrap yard out of the county.

While the thieves are likely getting pennies on the dollar for selling the stolen wire, AT&T has suffered a five-figure loss repairing and replacing the lines.
