FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): It’s always important to practice safe driving, but the Indiana State Police want to remind Hoosiers that it’s also important to stay safe when your car isn’t moving.

Indiana State Police say the safest place for a disabled vehicle is away from traffic. If it’s not possible to remove the vehicle from the roadway or someone is injured, call 911.

After the vehicle is away from traffic, state police say to stay in the vehicle, remain buckled up, turn on flashing lights and call for help.

If anyone decides to leave the vehicle, remember to stay as far away from traffic as possible, put the parked car between the person and moving traffic, do not turn backs to oncoming traffic and always be aware of the surroundings.

If drivers have to leave their cars, police ask they leave a note explaining what happened and contact information.
