Mike Pence reads to school children at tree-lighting ceremony

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana governor and Vice President-elect Mike Pence hosted a tree-lighting ceremony at the statehouse.

The Republican appeared with his wife, Karen Pence, and read “The Night Before Christmas” to a group of elementary schoolchildren Friday morning.

The students later constructed ornaments and posed for photos with Pence, who is leaving Indiana to serve as Donald Trump’s vice president in January.

The Pences capped off the event by turning on the lights on the state’s Christmas tree, which is in the rotunda of the Statehouse.

The event was Pence’s only publicly announced event for the day. Pence is expected to travel to Louisiana on Saturday to campaign for Louisiana state Treasurer John Kennedy, a Republican who is running for U.S. Senate. Louisiana’s Senate election is Dec. 10.
