INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson says the state set a record with 33 percent of voters in the Nov. 8 general election casting their ballots early.

Lawson said Friday this year’s mark compares with 24 percent in 2008 and 22 percent in 2012.

Lawson said the election turnout of 58 percent of registered voters fell short of the level of 62 percent in 2008, when Democratic President Barack Obama won his first term. She said 2.8 million of Indiana’s 4.8 million registered voters cast ballots this year in an election highlighted by Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was Trump’s running mate.
