FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Allen County Board of Commissioners has dissolved the County’s Solid Waste Management District.

Making the move today, the County’s new Department of Environmental Management will take its place as of March 3rd. The staff, assets, functions and duties of the District will be transferred to the new department, which will be directly under the commissioners’ authority.

Services previously performed by the district, like drop-off recycling trailers, Tire Day, Tox-Away Day, electronics recycling, and education awareness programs, will continue to be offered through the County DEM. Thomas Fox was chosen to head up the new department, replacing Tony Burrus, who retired last year as Solid Waste Management District Director.

The move comes after state lawmakers gave commissioners the ability to dissolve such districts back in 2016.
