“Baby Box” Bill Heads Awaits Governor’s Signature

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A bill that would allow babies to be surrendered anonymously has passed its final legislative hurdle.

The Indiana House voted to advance the so-called “baby box” bill. It now heads to Governor Mike Pence's desk for him to sign it into law.

If approved, the boxes would be placed at fire stations, churches, hospitals and other approved locations. The child would be placed inside and authorities would be alerted immediately.

The bill, authored by Rep. Casey Cox (R-Fort Wayne) is an extension of the Safe Haven law that allows infants to turned over safely to professionals without legal consequences.
