Bishop Hying Installed in Gary, 4th to Hold Post

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ Bishop Donald Hying has been installed as the fourth bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Gary.

Hying was installed during a ceremony Tuesday afternoon at Holy Angels Cathedral in Gary. The Times of Munster reports more than 25 bishops and at least 100 local priests and deacons attended the by-invitation-only ceremony.

Pope Francis appointed the 51-year-old Hying in November to succeed Bishop Dale Melczek, who retired at age 76 after 18 years leading the diocese. Hying had served as auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee since 2011.

Hying says he expects to spend the first few months visiting parishes and schools and familiarizing himself with the people and communities of northwestern Indiana.
