Census data shows Allen County slowly losing “3rd-largest” distinction

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Allen County may not be the third-biggest county in Indiana for much longer.

Census population estimates released Thursday currently has Allen County at 3rd, behind Marion and Lake Counties, with almost 373,000 residents.

But the Indiana Business Research Center tells the Journal Gazette that their population projections have Allen County dropping to fourth by 2030, with Hamilton County surpassing us. It’s thanks to average growth numbers: Hamilton County has averaged 2.5% growth every year for the past seven years, while Allen County’s population growth is hanging below 1%.

The IBRC says 55 Indiana counties had some form of a population increase in the past year. Read their full study here.
