Chemical Spill Reported In Elkhart River From Wolcottville Wastewater Plant

WOLCOTTVILLE, Ind. (WOWO): The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has been treating a chemical leaking from a wastewater plant in Wolcottville.

They say the release happened overnight into the North Branch of the Elkhart River, around 4.5 miles west of the treatment plant in Noble County.

The plant is located at 604 West County Line Road in Wolcottville in LaGrange County.

Around 1,200 and 1,400 gallons of acidic ferric chloride was discharged from the plant. Some of the chemical stayed inside the plant, but an unknown quantity of the orange liquid released away from the plant.

They say to avoid contact with the creek and keep children, pets and livestock out of the water while they continue to best find a way to assess how much of the chemical was leaked.
