Civil War Flags Returned to Richmond

RICHMOND, Ind. (AP): Two flags from an Army regiment that trained in Richmond during the Civil War have returned home for the 150th anniversary of the war's end.

The 57th Regiment's flags were recently moved from the Indiana War memorial to displays at the Morrisson-Reeves Library and the Wayne County Historical Museum in Richmond.

The regiment included volunteers from east-central Indiana and west-central Ohio who mustered into service in November 1861.

An 1865 “Directory & Soldier's Registry of Wayne County” states that the 57th “saw arduous service” and suffered heavy losses in battle. That registry says the regiment crossed the entire length of Kentucky three times and Tennessee six times during the 1861-1865 war.
