MUNSTER, Ind. (AP) _ Consultants hired to decide the best location for a stop for an extension of the South Shore commuter rail met with more than 100 areas residents to hear their ideas.
Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District General Manager Michael Noland says the meeting Thursday night was part of the process for the draft environmental impact study.
The (Munster) Times reports (http://bit.ly/1SNWzXe ) the preferred options for stations, route and maintenance and layover yards could be picked by summer 2017. The extension is expected to cost $571 million.
An application will be made to the Federal Transit Administration for half of the funds. Lake County communities have preliminarily pledged to contribute about $4.2 million annually for 30 years and the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority is expected to contribute most of the remainder.
