Council endorses refunds for Red River customers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Fort Wayne City Council has passed a non-binding resolution to give citizens a refund for bad trash services experienced this year.

Red River Waste Solutions has missed thousands of pickups since taking over as the city’s garbage contractor in January. They’ve been fined a total of more than $250,000, and the Council is proposing giving each customer a refund.

Jason Arp is the only one who voted against it last night, saying he’s worried about where the money’s coming from:

“Us giving $12 back isn’t coming from the contractor, it’s coming from city funds. We’re going to have to go back to the property taxpayer to finance whatever we’re going to do.”

The proposed refund isn’t much, just $12 per customer, most likely in a “credit adjustment.” ABC 21 reports Councilman Russ Jehl says it should be done:

“After this many months of collection there should be the ability for the disbursement of at least a month’s credit,” Jehl said.

Another issue to consider. I’ve heard from others they have noticed times when the truck picking up the garbage is also picking up the recyclables. I guess red river has found a unique way to speed up their pick up times.
