Crown Point 911 Director’s Proposed Stipend Questioned

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) _ A county official from northwestern Indiana is questioning a proposal that would give Lake County's new E-911 director a $6,750 stipend to pay for his relocation from Iowa to  Indiana.

The Lake County Board of Commissioners will be asked Wednesday to amend Brian Hitchcock's contract to give him the money to move from Davenport, Iowa, to Lake County. That would be in addition to the $112,000 salary he'll receive annually over the life of his three-year contract.

Councilwoman Christine Cid says Hitchcock's proposed stipend is poorly timed and comes just before Lake County residents will have to pay for a new 1.5 percent income tax.

She tells The Times that while private companies sometimes make such deals with potential employees the county is spending taxpayer dollars.
