DEFIANCE, OH (WOWO) City officials in Defiance, Ohio, are urging people to avoid swimming, boating, fishing or drinking from the Maumee River near the city after a sewer pipe failure released untreated wastewater into the water.
The break occurred in a sewer line carrying wastewater from the Kingsbury pumping station to the Defiance Water Pollution Control facility, allowing sanitary sewage to enter the river, according to WTVG.
Officials said the municipal drinking water intake is located upstream of the break and is not affected. Work is underway to develop a corrective action plan with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Defiance County Health Department, according to WTVG.
Residents are advised to stay clear of the river in the affected area until water quality testing shows it is safe to resume recreational or consumptive use.
