Ex-sheriff’s detective sentenced in prescription drug thefts

MARION, Ind. (AP) — A former sheriff’s detective in northeastern Indiana has been sentenced to nearly two years of probation after admitting to stealing prescription painkillers from the department’s evidence room.

The Chronicle-Tribune reports former Grant County sheriff’s detective Shelby Taylor pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony charge of official misconduct and two misdemeanor charges of theft and possession of a controlled substance.

The charges came after Taylor was accused of stealing painkillers from the department’s evidence room on at least 19 separate occasions over the past three years.

Taylor resigned last year. He told the court he was only responsible for some of the 19 cases, saying “others are just as guilty as I am.”

Taylor said he stole the drugs because of back and joint pain.
