Fatal Elkhart Police Shooting Goes to Grand Jury

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) – A northern Indiana prosecutor says a grand jury will review the fatal shooting of a man by Elkhart police.

Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill Jr. says the grand jury will meet Jan. 27 to review the shooting death of 31-year-old Christopher James Ryckeart of Elkhart on Nov. 10.

Elkhart police said Ryckeart was shot during a chase when he backed his truck into the path of officers trying to arrest him. Police said three officers fired at Ryckeart, who died at the scene.

State police handled the investigation and presented their findings to Hill. Hill says he often convenes a grand jury to review police action shootings.
