First baby box in northwest Ohio installed in Hicksville

HICKSVILLE, Ohio (WOWO) – The first baby box in Ohio has been installed.

The installation comes after the passage of Senate Bill 332, which expanded the Ohio Safe Haven for Newborns Law, according to our partners in news at ABC 21. The law allows an individual to surrender a newborn without fear of prosecution.

The baby box was installed in the village of Hicksville at Community Memorial Hospital on North Columbus Street.

Funds were raised to support the effort, and supply a box, by the Knights of Columbus Foundation and Hicksville Rotary Club.

A blessing and dedication ceremony will take place this Thursday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. at Community Memorial Hospital.

Baby boxes are padded and include climate control, making them safe for drop-offs during all four seasons. When an infant is placed inside, the door automatically locks and authorities are notified.
