FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A Republican serving on the Fort Wayne City Council says a new proposed wheel tax is necessary to keep the city’s roads maintained.

Councilman Dr. John Crawford tells WOWO news the tax, which would charge people $25 to $40 a year depending on what type of vehicle they own, is a reaction to rising maintenance costs.
“Every city is having problems finding enough revenue to maintain their roads, because costs are up, and the revenue to replace the roads from property taxes are down, because of property tax caps,” he says.
The Council will hear the proposal tonight. There will be a public hearing on June 7, and a vote on the proposal on June 14.
