Fort Wayne man lucky to be alive after driving his snowmobile into a lake…

46 year-old Matthew Wagoner was riding a snowmobile near the north side of Jimmerson Lake in Steuben County.

He was with two other friends when he maneuvered onto the ice in order to check for a safe area to ride. As Wagoner drove along the northern shore of the lake he approached an area of open water and drove into the lake. Fellow riders watching from shore ran out onto the ice with a rope to try to rescue him.

In the meantime, Wagoner was able to break the thinner ice to get to a place where he could stand and was then pulled to safety by his fellow rides. He was taken to Parkview Hospital where he was treated for hypothermia, then released.
