FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A Fort Wayne man convicted of shooting at a police officer is heading to prison.

Charles Benson, 26, was sentenced to 40 years for attempted murder, one year for resisting law enforcement and 2 1/2 years for criminal recklessness, according to the News-Sentinel.

He was found guilty of the three charges June 2.

Police say when Officer Robert Geiger pulled a car over near Hanna and Lewis streets on Jan. 30, Benson ran from the car. The officer ran after him, then Benson started shooting at the officer.

Benson has a 153 days’ jail credit and plans to appeal the decision.
