Fort Wayne Mayor threatens lawsuit if City Council cuts Public Safety Director

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): There could be a lawsuit on the horizon between Fort Wayne’s Mayor and the City Council over the city’s Public Safety Director position.

Tonight’s City Council meeting will include discussion on eliminating Rusty York’s position, as Council Republicans say his salary can be better spent elsewhere, but the Journal Gazette reports that Mayor Tom Henry has threatened to sue the Council if it happens. He says such a move can only be done during budget discussions in October.

Republicans say York’s nearly $161,000 yearly salary can be put directly into the City’s public safety budget.

If the proposal passes an initial vote tonight, it’ll have a final vote a week later.

Public safety should be in the hands of the Police Chief, Fire Chief, and all department heads as a common concern. Public Safety Director sounds like a political hack job and a waste of taxpayer dollars.
