KNOX, Ind. (AP) _ About 20 homes in a northern Indiana city are without water since underground pipes froze during the area's recent blasts of subzero temperatures.

Knox Mayor Rick Chambers says the lines started freezing Jan. 30 because the pipes in the neighborhood aren't buried deep enough to avoid this winter's hard freeze.

Chambers tells WSJV-TV the neighborhood was built during World War II as temporary housing in the city about 30 miles southwest of South Bend.

Christy Clemons tells WNDU-TV that her family's had to carry in water for the past two weeks and that it's been terrible.

The mayor says he hopes warmer temperatures will allow crews to run hoses from nearby fire hydrants to the houses as a temporary solution.
