SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Fire officials in South Bend say a 10-year-old girl has died and four other people have been injured in a house fire on the city’s northwest side.

They say five people were inside the home when the fire began around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, and a man, a woman and two other children were able to escape. Firefighters needed to locate the girl in a front bedroom. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Officials say the four survivors were being treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and cuts.

Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the house when firefighters arrived on the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
