House Lawmakers Settle in to New Political Reality

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana's House Republicans have the most power they have had in four decades, but their leader is striking a cautious tone as he looks to hold onto that power.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma promised last week that Republicans would “tread lightly'' as they press an agenda in the upcoming session that includes an overhaul of school funding and legislative ethics reform.

Republicans added two seats to their already powerful supermajority in last week's elections.

Democratic House Minority Leader Scott Pelath agreed with Bosma that the two sides will have bipartisan measures they can agree on. But Pelath also said Democrats will be looking for ways to break apart the Republican caucus, just as they did earlier this year on a proposed gay marriage ban.
