HUD Awards Gary $3.37 Million for Public Housing

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the city of Gary a $3.37 million grant to make improvements in the public housing.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports the award Thursday came a day after HUD Assistant Secretary Sandra Brooks Henriquez criticized the shoddy living conditions at public housing in Gary, calling them “totally unacceptable.'' The city announced a week ago that HUD would take over would take over management of the Gary Housing Authorities for at least two years after Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson said the problems were too big for the city to address.

About 3,000 people live in the city's nine public housing centers, including five senior high-rise centers.
