IN Department of Health has MERS Virus Hotline

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The Indiana Department of Health has established a hotline for state residents who have questions about a mysterious Middle East virus that hospitalized a man in northwest Indiana.

Health Department officials say the hotline will be open seven days a week until further notice from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The number is 1-877-826-0011.

The hotline was established after the first confirmed case of an American infected with Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, was reported at Community Hospital in Munster.

Community Hospital says because of privacy laws it can only disclose the patient is in good condition. Hospital officials say they are maintaining appropriate isolation protocols to protect staff.

The case is being investigated by state health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
