INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Big donations have been flowing into the Indiana governor’s race in ways that – while legal – skirt the state’s limits on corporate and union contributions.

An Associated Press analysis of campaign contributions to Republican Gov. Mike Pence and his Democratic challenger and former House Speaker John Gregg show they have received nearly $4.5 million in donations from limited liability companies and political action committees that have close ties to corporations and labor unions.

Indiana’s 1986 contribution law does not limit those entities, and government transparency advocates say they are often used to sidestep caps on contributions.

Pence and Gregg have raised a combined $12.7 million for the election since last year in what could be one of Indiana’s most expensive campaigns.
