INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Sen. Dan Coats and Indiana's seven Republican congressmen have sent a letter to the Department of Health and Human Services seeking congressional district specific information on the 245 unaccompanied immigrant children in the state.
The letter says the lawmakers want to know where the children are being placed, saying they want to ensure that sponsors are committed to providing a safe and caring environment. The letter also says with school starting, the lawmakers want to make sure local communities have the information they need about the children.
The letter follows comments Tuesday by Gov. Mike Pence, also a Republican, asking President Barack Obama to deport the children. Pence said he did not learn about the placement of the children with Indiana families until reading about it in news reports.
