WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – Police say a developmentally disabled man unable to tell the difference between reality and fantasy struck and seriously injured a woman with a van while acting out a “real-life” video game.
West Lafayette police Capt. Gary Sparger tells the Journal & Courier the 18-year-old man drove off in his mother's van on Jan. 18.
Sparger says the man told officers he intentionally struck six cars and ran over and seriously injured a 31-year-old West Lafayette woman who was standing next to her car.
He says the man told officers “he was acting out real-life Grand Theft Auto,” a video game in which players evade police and instigate violent interactions with pedestrians and police.
Formal charges have not been filed against the man, but prosecutors continue reviewing the case.
